“For years I have wanted to get dual citizenship. I am Italian-American but wanted the ability to also be an Italian citizen. I am lucky because as a second generation Italian, here in America, I was eligible to also become an Italian citizen, according to the citizenship laws in Italy. I went through the very long process of gathering all my family's documents, proving that my grandparents where born in Italy and migrated to the United States, where they had given birth to my parents. It took me years of hunting down documents from other states, getting official seals from state offices.
They were very specific on what they needed and the process was expensive and timely. But, I knew if I wanted it bad enough it could happen. When I finally got everything in order, I had to make an appointment with the Italian Consulate in Miami. The appointment was a year-and-a-half from the date I made it. It seems everything in this process would be a wait…
…At this same time, I was learning Italian and I had hired a tutor. I also had joined an app where you can talk to other people from different countries where each helps the other with learning the language. I had connected with a few people from Italy who wanted to speak English, as I wanted to practice my Italian. I had become very good friends with one woman in particular…”
